Dieu Donné

Introduction to Contemporary Papermaking, 2005-2010

This course offered an introduction to the papermaking process and included how to make sheets of paper as well as various papermaking and artistic techniques.  Each session included a lecture, demonstration, viewing of works from the archive at Dieu Donné, and hands-on experimentation.

Creative Techniques for Artists, 2007-2010

This course offered the opportunity to explore advanced techniques culled from over thirty years of exploration with the medium, many of which originated or were developed through work produced at Dieu Donné. Each session focused on specific techniques and their application for two- and three-dimensional projects, including multiple stenciling, various casting methods, watermarking, and pulp painting.

Open Studio, 2005-2010

This course offered the opportunity for those familiar with basic papermaking to experiment with the medium on their own with assistance from artistic staff.  Participants used various pulps and materials created by staff. The last half hour of each session was dedicated to demonstrating how to press work and load the drying systems.

Guest Panelist, Spirituality in Art

Donald Kuspit’s “Reconsidering the Spiritual in Art” puts forward a definition and Mr. Kuspit’s  argument for how rampant materialism, excessive theory, and an over-reliance on science has almost snuffed out the spirituality in art today. Panelists discussed their reaction to "Reconsidering the Spiritual in Art," considering questions of the contemporary definition of spirituality, skepticism versus sincerity, modernism versus postmodernism, and the compatibility of organized religion and contemporary art.
